About the Indiana Department of Insurance (IDOI):

The purpose of the Indiana Department of Insurance is to protect Hoosiers as they purchase and use insurance products to keep their assets and their families from loss or harm. Consumers may need assistance with certain claim situations or just help in understanding how their policies work. Our other primary obligation is to monitor the financial solvency of the insurance companies domiciled in Indiana so that the legal promises made in insurance policies are honored. To these ends, our Department staff is committed to providing exceptional customer service for both our consumers and our companies, and to maintain a fair and objective viewpoint as we examine each issue and circumstance within our jurisdiction. 

 

Role Overview

The Consumer Specialist is the frontline for the Department in assisting consumers with issues regarding the business of insurance. The Consumer Specialist assists the public and other divisions of the Department with research and resolution of insurance problems.


Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $42,900.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this job are as follows:

  • Review consumer complaints and prepare for processing adhering to Chapter 27 of the Indiana Codes.
  • Compose letters to consumers and companies, and research insurance problems.
  • Act as lead for ACA consumer complaints and correspondence to resolve issues and properly record/report inquiries
  • Effectively communicate with other state agencies directly involved with ACA and the health insurance inquiries/resolutions.
  • Properly direct and transfer health insurance exchange and/or other health care reform questions to the appropriate division/department.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment:

  • The ideal candidate for this role should have 7 years of experience applying the below, outlines knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role. Completion of relevant educational degree(s) such as a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field may substitute for equivalent years of experience.
  • Ability to learn ACA provisions, market rules and regulations.
  • Specialized knowledge of the principles and practices of the insurance industry.
  • Advanced proficiency in both verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Knowledge of insurance statues and codes.
  • Ability to interpret and apply insurance laws, guidelines and regulations.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
