Job Description

The San Francisco Standard is seeking a Fall/Winter 2025 data and innovation intern to work across the newsroom. We are looking for a proactive, inventive thinker with a diverse toolkit who can use data and AI-aided reporting to find unique stories and create beautiful graphics. The successful candidate will develop their own ideas for stories and newsroom tools, as well as work with other reporters and editors to develop computational and visual components of their projects. You should be comfortable gathering and handling data, and have an eye for detail to make sure information is expressed correctly and effectively. We're looking for someone who is comfortable with technology and fluent in a range of tools, including generative AI, to do creative and impactful journalism. You should be eager to learn on the job, experiment with new tools, and share your findings with staff across the newsroom.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Proven ability to gather and clean data in spreadsheets, and conduct analysis using Python or R.
  • Comfort with off-the-shelf data visualization tools such as Datawrapper and Flourish.
  • Experience with and openness to using machine learning, including genAI, to analyze data, automate tasks and create tools.
  • A relentless spirit of experimentation and collaboration.
  • Knowledge of Javascript, D3.js, Svelte or Adobe Illustrator and GIS tools is a plus.

This is an in-office position on the enterprise reporting team in our San Francisco office, with occasional remote work depending on the days/times of your shifts. Start date is flexible, September-October, 2025.

This internship pays $25 per hour, and may be part-time or full-time.

To apply for this position, please submit your resume along with 4 to 6 work samples, a cover letter and contact information for at least two references. In your cover letter, pitch two ideas you'd be interested in pursuing as a data intern—a graphic, a story, a tool, up to you! Your pitches should explain why these projects matter and how you would approach them. Your cover letter should also detail when you are available to start working, and what days and times you are regularly available for work.
